Fifth grade students at All Saints’ Episcopal School recently donned their math goggles and engaged in a biographical exploration of famous mathematicians.
The goal of this project was to help fifth graders appreciate mathematics more deeply, and understand how society has been touched by the contributions of people who have dedicated their lives to the study of mathematics.
Students selected a mathematician and, using a variety of internet and library resources, created an artifact showcasing the accomplishments of their mathematician, as well as interesting anecdotal facts about their life. Students were challenged to make their mathematician come to life for their classmates by creating and presenting a Powerpoint slideshow, adorning a poster or trading card, creating and sharing a video, or even dressing up like their mathematician.
Put on your math goggles and make mathematics come to life for your students!
