Our first grade students start the school year with an exploration of self and family by reading the book called This is How We Do It, One Day in the Lives of Seven Kids From Around the World by Mat Lamothe. The author provides a window into the lifestyles and traditions of other children from around the world.

Each student then created an infographic entitled “This is Me.” As they shared the infographics with their classmates, what began as an “All About Me” exercise soon led to a discussion of shared experiences. The students made connections to their own lives and interests, and they realized that although they may have different backgrounds, they also have much in common.

It was a wonderful way to celebrate their similarities as well as learn about each other’s different cultures and backgrounds.
