Beginner students are learning about Stik, a graffiti artist based in London, whose work wordlessly shows connections and tells stories of his community. Early Childhood Art teacher Amber Stautzenberger decided to display connections and stories with teachers and students at the Lower School beginning with three doors to focus on the primary colors (red, yellow, blue). Their work was loved by so many that there were a lot of requests for our youngest friends to create more. “So far we have produced thirteen doors. I think this has helped build their confidence in and out of the art studio,” Mrs. Stautzenberger said.
Students began by making smaller versions of Stik’s stick figures by creating a background using the colors of the rainbow and using six lines to draw a head, torso, and limbs. Then they used white paint, like Stik, to fill in the head and torso. They completed their figures by creating eyes using either googly eyes or two dots. They used the same process for decorating teachers’ doors. Beginners used various shades of a specific color to create each door that shows connections through touch and visual contact. Thus far, they have made magenta, pink, red, orange, yellow, green, turquoise, blue, purple, and black (for Día de los Muertos).
Not only has this project brought confidence to these three-year-old artists by seeing their work throughout the building, but it has taught them to work collaboratively and patiently while improving their motor skills and learning about new colors.
Keep up the good work, Eagles!
