BCD 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students presented their original musical, “Candy Land!” in February. The musical was designed, written, and performed by the students themselves with guidance from BCD Music Department Head, Ryan Parker, using the Opera America curriculum, “Music! Words! Opera!”, as a framework and guiding approach. Mr. Parker brought this curriculum back from a professional development workshop hosted by Central City Opera during which he learned about this wonderful creative opportunity.
Throughout the process, the students and Mr. Parker worked together on creating an original story, music, script, instrumental arrangements, characters, production elements, and more. The students brought their unique individual talents to the forefront of this experience. There were singers, actors, dancers, balloon artists, writers, drummers, cellists, xylophone players, humorists, and much more. Mr. Parker shared, “The limitless potential of our students was evident throughout the creative process, rehearsals, and in the culminating performances. I am so proud of what our students accomplished with this production.” Congratulations to all the students and helpers involved and Mr. Parker on undergoing this unique, challenging, and creative process. It was a thrill to watch!
