Creating Opportunities for Girls in Computer Science

In 2012-2013, the Online School for Girls prepared 14 girls to take the AP® Computer Science exam — more girls than were prepared by schools in 18 different states: New Hampshire, Iowa, Delaware, Rhode Island, Idaho, New Mexico, Nebraska, South Dakota, Utah, Nevada, Vermont, Kansas, Louisiana, Alaska, North Dakota, Montana, Mississippi, and Wyoming (according to data compiled by Barbara Ericson at Georgia Tech). In 2013-2014, 30 students took AP® Computer Science with OSG, putting us on track to pass Wisconsin, Missouri, Maine, Oregon, Alabama, Hawaii, and West Virginia.

And, students are finding great success in the courses. Last year, OSG students were recognized by the National Center for Women in Technology (NCWIT) for outstanding work in the field: 6 students were NCWIT National Runners-Up, 7 students were NCWIT Regional Competition Winners, and 8 students were NCWIT Regional Runners-Up.

OSG computer science students in the Los Angeles area were recently featured in the LA Times: http://www.latimes.com/local/education/la-me-online-school-girls-20140720-story.html
